Research Create Affordable Activities for the Poor & Orphans

At RECAPO, we research, create and provide support activities for orphans, poor households and people living with HIV/AIDS in and around Mchezi area, Lilongwe, Malawi.

A decade ago, Brother Patrick A. Mbwana of Mtendere Marist Brothers donated a piglet from the missionary’s piggery project and cash to transport the piglet to Chizuma Village, Traditional Authority Chimutu in Lilongwe district. This is the seed that started a self help community based program later called RECAPO (Research Create Affordable Activities for the Poor & Orphans). Over fifty families have since benefited from the piggery project; they raise pigs for sale and as source of nutrition in their own families.

RECAPO community based organization (CBO) works with villages on the north eastern outskirts of Lilongwe, the capitol of Malawi. The community has suffered great loss due to HIV/AIDS and unfavorable environmental changes. As the city has grown, squatter camps have arisen in the area, industrial waste has polluted the Mchezi River and dambos that supply water to the community and agriculture production, hence the mainstay of the community has suffered equally.

RECAPO has introduced several self-help projects which include piggery, rain water harvesting, health and agriculture trainings, knitting, embroidery, care giving trainings and environmental rehabilitation. RECAPO organizes a tree planting campaign through community leaders and local schools . 35,000 trees have been planted under the project since 2001.

The organization is focusing on providing support to orphans, people living with HIV/AIDS and other poor households with subsistence agriculture, education and skills development in the short term. RECAPO is seeking funding for these ongoing projects and new initiatives. – DONATE via PayPal today!

The organization is now increasing focus on long term community development and capacity building programs. RECAPO is seeking partners to rehabilitate the water resources within the Mchezi river catchment area, construction of a junior school, community health center, sports and entertainment facility, clean water supply services and training villagers in sustainable agriculture practices.
